Curricular Intervention: A Teacher's Guide to Global Citizenship

Global citizenship has become an empty buzzword in education, and despite this dilemma more teachers encouraged to build a global village, teach global competencies and bring the world into the classroom. This work can be challenging when the notions of what is global education are ill-defined and constantly in flux. As teachers make efforts to broaden the global scope and grapple with connections between the global and local, it is increasingly important to set teachers up for success and to invest in teacher development so that educators can become acquainted with their own unique perspectives around global development and global citizenship. What often presents a challenge is that teachers and students are not given an opportunity to dig beneath the surface of global issues and challenge assumptions. This gap in knowledge can become dangerous if left unexamined because Western ways of viewing the world go unchallenged and universalism prevails as a blanket statement to imply that global citizens are all the same.
